Newton recognized this: the passage I have quoted from his Preface actually begins with a recognition that the Ancients had used mechanics in the investigation of natural things. He points out that the medieval schoolmen had forgotten this, and that the moderns have once again become interested in the laws of mathematics which govern movement.
